Why do we use Canadian Western Red Cedar?
It is one of world’s most durable woods. With richly textured grain and colours that range from mellow ambers, reddish cinnamons to rich sienna browns. Fine grained texture with a satin lustre. Because it is virtually pitch and resin free, the wood easily accepts a range of finishes, from fine oils and stains, to solid coats and paints. This enables us to finish your shutters to any colour you desire. Cedar has a unique aroma. There is naturally occurring thujaplicins in its heartood. These compounds resist moisture and are toxic to decay-causing fungi and insects and help preserve the wood to give it long lasting appeal.
A little bit of interesting history.
The Native Americans have used Western Red Cedar for centuries. They called it the “Tree of Life.” The bark they used for rope, clothing and baskets and the logs they used for canoes, totem poles and housing.
Environmental factors
For the concern of our children, we all know the importance of preserving our environment for future generations. The Canadian Government has strict regulation regarding forest management. All the timber used at Sarmax comes from forest that are being regenerated, where wildlife habitat is protected and the biodiversity of the forest is maintained.

Why use aluminium shutters
Aluminium is a sturdy light weight material ensuring that your shutters are strong and secure yet not to heavy as to make operation difficult. Available in a wide range of anodised colours they are extremely low maintenance and should not require repainting for the lifetime of the shutter. When used externally another great benefit of aluminium on the Australian coast is it’s resistance to corrosion.
Naturally aluminium is a stronger material than cedar, and adds extra protection and security when fitted with key locks.
